Envisioning a Sustainable Future: Our Warming Planet Redux is a thought-provoking art experience that builds on a similarly titled exhibit presented in Malden earlier this year and held in collaboration with the City of Malden.
This re-curated version highlights a diverse range of visual works that respond to the climate crisis—grappling with its realities while turning our attention toward hope, resilience, and action.
Rather than featuring individual artist statements, the exhibit offers a series of reflective summary texts woven throughout the space. These offer viewers a collective voice drawn from the original exhibit, expressing both the urgency of environmental challenges and the possibilities for transformation.
From evocative photographs and recycled materials to deeply symbolic paintings, the pieces on display explore themes of ecological awareness, climate anxiety, community care, and visionary thinking. Together, they invite visitors to consider: What kind of future can we imagine? What actions can we take now? And where can we find hope?
Join us at UMA for this inspiring multimedia and multi-sensory journey—one that centers creativity, compassion, and the shared work of building a livable planet for generations to come.
This interactive artwork, designed and curated by Karyn Alzayer invites participants to contribute to a growing quilt-inspired mural made of colorful paper strips. Visitors are encouraged to reflect on the prompts, write their own thoughts on a blank strip, and glue it into one of the open spaces on the quilt block.
Why a Quilt?
Quilts are often made from leftover fabric—scraps once considered useless. Yet from these remnants, something beautiful and whole can emerge. This mirrors our current moment: we’ve used up much, but we still have what we need to imagine and build a better future.
As each new piece is added, this collaborative quilt grows—not just as a work of art, but as a shared vision for climate hope, resilience, and renewal.
This event is supported in part by a grant from the Malden Cultural Council, a local agency of the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
